上記×印の表現は英語の統語上の制約に反し、文法的な正確さに欠けています。客観的な―外的な要因などによる―義務を表す場合、主観的な義務を表す要素を使うことはできません。下記の表現1)～3)は、上記○印の表現と同様、文法的に問題のない自然な表現です。

1) He ought to [should] come, but he won't.

2) I insist now they had to do it last week.

3) I told them they must go.

いっぽう、下記の表現1)～3)は、上記×印の表現と同様、英語の統語上の制約に反し、文法的な正確さに欠けています。

1) He must come, but he won't.

2) I insist now they must do it last week.

3) John must have arrived by tomorrow.
