*A pleasant smell is still in my car.

【和訳】

私の車の中は、まだいい匂いがする。

There is still a pleasant smell in my car.

【要点】

具体物が視覚的に展開する感じ ("visual impact") がない場合、存在文 (existential sentence) を構成できない。Kuno (1971), Breivik (1975, 1979, 1981a, 1981b, 1983), etc.

【類例】

1) In my car there is still a pleasant smell. / *In my car is still a pleasant smell. / There are polar bears in the universe. / In the universe there are polar bears. / *In the universe are polar bears. / A pleasant smell still remains [exists] in my car. / There still remains [exists] a pleasant smell in my car. / We are looking at the picture painted by Jim. A middle-aged man and three boys are seated on chairs or stools at a spindly, square table. An accountant book is on the table.

2) There appeared a man in front of us. / *There disappeared a man from our sight.
