whenと時間表現


*At ten o'clock, John arrived when Harry left.

【和訳】

非文のため意味不明。

At ten o'clock, John arrived.

【要点】

when節は、時点を表す副詞表現と共に使うことはできない。Geis (1970).

【類例】

1) *Since leaving school, I have never met George again. [since = because] / Since leaving school, I have never met George again. [since = after that until now]

2) *John left a few minutes long after Bill left. / John left a few minutes after Bill left. / *Frank ate twenty minutes long before Steve ate. / Frank ate twenty minutes before Steve ate. / Mike stayed long after he should have. / John left long before Harry did.

3) *John expired while he watched TV for thirty hours. / John watched TV for thirty minutes. / *Harold stayed at home while he was sick for three weeks. / Harold was sick for three weeks.
